WARNING: Prepare yourself for a RANT!
In today's Hartford Courant there was a write up about the New Nine at Mayor Mike's that I have been busting my hump on for the past few months! This would have been lovely if I truly did not care at all about not only getting recognition for but even being MENTIONED as the freaking photographer! I am not a glory hound, I am actually quite shy about this stuff, I was a nervous wreck, to be sure- I wanted everyone to love their stuff and I think they truly do. Yes, I know, this should be satisfaction enough for me- a job well done, the love and support of my family & friends...I guess I am just a shallow person because seriously, how could they not even say 'BY HARTFORD PHOTOGRAPHER CARLA TEN EYCK" like, not even anywhere in this? It's a PHOTOGRAPHY opening!! I guess the bottom line is in dealing with people in everyday life who don't 'get' what I do, who see me as a person who just 'snaps a couple photos' (I could maim people who say that, honestly) and don't see the planning, the conceptual thought that goes into what i do- the crafting of the light, how to tone the images, the storytelling involved then please don't hire me. But for this reporter (well honestly I think she is just a gossip columnist and I guess I am just not that noteworthy) to write this up and not even think to mention me, just makes me feel that people take photography for granted, because, really, any monkey with a camera could have done what I did, right???

I was actually going to write a blog today on how I thought you were a shallow person.
I wouldn't think that a writer who doesn't do their homework/research into a piece they're writing i.e. finding out and interviewing the photographer, wouldn't understand the preparation that goes into the work you do.
Thanks Jeff! Just sitting here crying in my tea. Poor, shallow old me. :(
It's not shallow. You deserve rcognition!
And what that writer did is the equivalent of writing about a painting and not mentioning the artist. How dare she!
You should write them and ask for a correction in a future issue. You know how many times i've given images to papers & mags only to NEVER see a photo credit - people just don't think.
You are awesome - I can't even believe they omitted that. GRRRR - frustrating! See you tonight.
AH
I left a comment at the Courant.com
Please... Not mentioning Carla?#!@* ...Yeah...WHATEVER!
That's so frustrating. I didn't get to attend the Gala, but I'm sure, that like all of your images, that those 9 portraits are Awesome!
I just read the story online and it was really hard to read - poorly written. Shame on the Courant for doing such a crappy job by not reporting anything about the homegrown creator of the portraits.
That is just unbelievable... what are they doing over there at the Courant, did they fire all there editors?
carla... we know you rock... and if that ditzy "writer" didn't know that... her loss!!!PSHHHH!
yeah, I posted my 2 cents on the Courant site, too. What the frick!? Never mind that you actually interned there back in the day...
OMG!!! Rude! I can't believe that they didn't mention you at all. I agree with Robert Norman, you DEFINATELY should write them a letter and ask for a correction. That's not fair.
I feel like I do this for my clients first, like you do, but I also have a bit of me that wants people to think I am working hard and it shows. So yes, that attaches to your name, which you want them to remember. No not shallow at all!! You deserve it.
Just wait till your on Oprah and you tell the world about this dude! Make sure NOT to mention his name!!
OMG!! what a LOSER!! I'm calling the Courant right now....
keep your chin up love, we all know you ROCK!!
xoxo
