ten eyck tuesday dec 16 class was a freeze OUT!

***disclaimer*** I realize that I start off ALL of the Ten Eyck Tuesday posts with how much fun we had..... but FOR REAL I do have fun, each and every time like it's my JOB! Wait. What? OK, it IS my job!! AND I LOVE MY FREAKING JOB!!!!!!

So stop hating on my fun recap and read ON:

The second December Ten Eyck Tuesday installment was so much fun- this group was the A Number One CHATTIEST most caffeine addicted group I have ever had! They make Mike's venti black eye with energy look like a decaf coffee! MELISSA!! OK, so Val and Simone were not the culprits so I will let you all deduce who the other two were... ;)

Our models for the day? My good buddy & the Mrs. New Good Buddy MR. AND MRS. ERIC FOLEY! Holy Hotness Batman! These two were smoking it UP, and thank god because it was SO freaking cold out! I forgot to bring my hat and gloves so I was super chilly...! But they kept us all warm with all of the talking and laughing we did...
So we started off in Blue Back Square- but not the pretty, easy to shoot part that you may assume I took them! We started in a parking garage- which to me, is fun and a place I would actually choose to shoot. It was fun seeing how everyone got what I saw after explaining how light is really everywhere, and texture, and cool nooks to shoot just ABOUND if you train your eye to look for them all... so we started in these empty spaces...

The best part was showing how radically you can change the feel of an image just by how you decide to expose your image... This is the same spot, but they just sat down.

Here is Simone in action working on changing up her perspective

Same spot again, I just stood up

The garage had these super crazy LED lights in them, so it was fun playing with my white balance to create an immediate mood. Well and then there is Mr. Foley being all moody himself! He really is fun to shoot!!

Miss Aurora Onorato getting in nice and close

Miss Melissa Wilson worked it

So we were headed to Starbucks to warm up, right? Well.... we didn't get too far... because, well, doesn't this little corner look AWESOME to shoot in? So we made a pit stop

Got some snuggly close ups- and man Erin's eyes? Are sooooooo pretty! She is just so photogenic and beautiful and easy to work with

Miss Valeen Thivierge, of The Sweetest Days Photography, working her D3, baby!!!!! We were instant friends, of course.

While shooting Val shooting the Foley's I had to shoot the Foley's, follow?

Then I had to go back in there and shoot... come ON

Poor Simone had the one eyed WILLY going on but it was hilarious. And cold. Did I mention that it was cold?

Simone, pulling a Mike Romano Blue Light Special. Loved the shoes of course

After warming up at Starbucks we went to a beautiful, awesome PARKING LOT! But wherever you are? Is where you are. And so? We work it OUT!!!

Here Eric Foley is working it out

Here I am pretending we are in Alaska or something. For no reason. But doesn't it feel like it? Did I mention that it was cold out?

OK, here are the cast of characters.... drum roll please....
From the Western part of the lovely state of Connecticut, Miss Aurora Onorato!

Again representing our Nutmeg State to points west is Miss Melissa Wilson!!

One of my new favorite people (she got Mike GOOD at our art opening last week and I am forever indebted to her) Miss Valeen Thivierge of The Sweetest Days, bringing it back east to Jewett CITY!!

And last but not least, coming up from the shoreline way... the wise-cracking stylings of Miss Simone Gutkin!

A must. Shoes, shoes as far as the eye could see.... not as bad as my office... and no I am not moving them for tonight :P

Awwww... check us out!!

I had so much fun shooting and learning with you all- don't forget what you challenged yourselves to do when you left and KEEP SHOOTING!!

i. officially. know. NOTHING!

OH MY GOD!!! I am about to rant, so RUN for your lives!!

I am going to just put myself out there and tell it: I HATE FIRST GRADE HOMEWORK!!!!

I can honestly tell you that nothing makes me feel more stupid and inadequate than trying to help my SIX YEAR OLD son with his homework at night! NOTHING!

You wanna debate RAW vs. JPEG?? BRING IT! (or not, just ask poor Bruce T.!) What color space do you shoot in? Other nerdy, seemingly cerebral photography related topics? COME ON I SAY! And so WHAT if all I do is quote Kevin Kubota? At least I GET IT!!

But ask me what the HELL the difference between a blended consonant or a diagraph is???? HUH?? No. NO! SHHHHH.... I am NOT interested!

Wait. is SHHHHHH a diagraph or a blended freaking consonant???!!!

GSDJNKGHHNDRNBHT NGNK;TREHINJOTEHRNCFGNLK DLM;'FOFTYJPTESSJOPIJ!!!! 46438903Q450[5UKOP'TFHMLKGNXF

The icing??

Tonight's homework question:

"3. One word with long i is____________. The word is _____________."

Ummm. what? w.h.a.t.? W.H.A.T.??? The word is?? What word are you referring to???? The one I just TOLD you about, like RIGHT BEFORE? That one? Does IDIOT have a long i?

No. It does not.

ten eyck tuesday contest...are you in?

Ten Eyck Tuesdays have been such a ray of light for me in so many ways- I love the chance to change things up and teach; I love cooking for everyone!!....and I really enjoy seeing everyone start to see and think and then shoot differently. That's my favorite.

For December I am going to change it up a bit- for a host of reasons-and want to offer this workshop at a discounted rate- did YOU get the memo about the economy being in the toilet? You didn't? Well Dave can email it to you! (sorry honey!! :) So in honor of that, and the holidays and the fact that we have a new President (yay!) Here is what I am proposing:

This December 2nd's Ten Eyck Tuesday will only be $150 instead of the regular rate of $350!

Here's the catch:

email me why YOU deserve a break- the top three best reasons will be the next workshop participants!!

Don't be shy! Send in your story! Make me laugh! Make me cry! JUST DO IT!!

carla@carlateneyck.com

New to the Ten Eyck Tuesday experience? DON'T BE! Here's the 411:

Ten Eyck Tuesdays, are appropriately on every first Tuesday of the month! Here we focus on learning how to make good images to start instead of back tracking and trying to fix stuff in the computer!

It's a full day workshop and it is very hands on- we talk, I set up a fun shoot, we eat, we laugh, and then we upload our images and do some post production on your computers. To wrap up we have a group critique. This last part has proved to be such an integral part of making people better shooters- they can see and identify why their image works or why it does not and then use that information the next time they are shooting!

I limit my class size to three students so that they get a lot of hands on attention and teaching.

ten eyck tuesday was a train wreck!

Well... not really!!! This past workshop we had the absolute pleasure of shooting my buddy Val McCormick and her husband Jack, who is a real life train engineer! In my house that is like celebrity status to my little guy Jack, who is a super train stalker enthusiast to say the least!
Meet the class.... of November 2008!!
Miss Katie Slater is like the yogi ninja QUEEN- she's UP she's DOWN- and man was she fun to shoot while she was shooting!

Miss Nikki Nicole was cracking me up all day and really working her wide angle!

Here we have Miss Sarah McCoy- who was banned from using her flash and really rocked her shots all day!

While shooting the train cars that were parked a switcher engine came by and we were lucky enough to be able to grab some shots! You like how I know what it's called, right?

Well our luck certainly didn't last long!! Check out the FUZZ on the left! Someone saw us there and called 5-0 on us! But we were allowed to be there because we had the proper person with us, I certainly would not advise going here on your own!! Check out Jack and Val's smirks!

While Jack was dealing with the po-po, Val was working it for us! And she was getting all mouthy- I had to advise her to SHHHH so we didn't all end up in the slammer for the night!! ;)

So we used Val's annoyance with authority to our advantage, look how HOT she is!!!!

So we decided to leave the train yard and go someplace with less security issues... so we sashayed over to the UCONN Law School, which is right down the street from my studio to work our intimate portraits. I love being able to work a shot like this ANYWHERE- and so I demonstrated this in a parking lot behind the school.

This is where we were- just to give you an idea. I had them sit - in general this shot works best when I am higher than them- and viola!

Here is Miss Nikki getting her shot- she got a great one from this series!

Here the ladies switch up their perspective

So looking around the Law School proved to be a little over visually stimulating so I showed the ladies how to simplify their shots with just a little pop of color- I slapped my 85mm 1.4, and shot this wide open in front of a bright red bush. The color combo was a little risky- with the pink of Val's shirt and the red of the bush- some people may not like that but Val and I? Bring it ON!! Us Mexican Ladies love that color combo!!

Miss Val, she was so much fun to work with and is SO photogenic!!!!

Jack was a blast to shoot! He's not angry here, I swear!

Gotta have at least ONE participant in a hoodie! Here is Miss Nikki hamming it up for me!

Sarah McCoy being all...McCoy with me ;)

And Katie? Let's just say she kept us roaring with laughter!!

Ten Eyck Tuesday October Edition

Yesterday was the first official Ten Eyck Tuesday Workshop at my studio in Hartford- and it was a BLAST! Big super props go to my friend and fellow photographer Robin Dini and her husband Frank, aka THE FRANKNESS for being so much fun to work with!

My next all day Ten Eyck Tuesday workshop is scheduled for TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4TH! Send me an email at info@carlateneyck.com or call the studio at 860-906-1993 to sign up- class size is limited to only THREE spots

Also- I have some spots open for models so if you are interested, call or email me! This list is booking up FAST so get on it!

We started the day with a review of the basics of what makes a good image- and introduced some more sophisticated image making concepts to get everyone thinking about this before going out and shooting...Robin shot these next two during the class

I limit the class size to only three people so that everyone gets plenty of personal instruction and discussion time- here are the ladies of the day: Val, Eileen and Claudia

OK so i use my hands a lot when I talk...Robin and Mike were dogging me out about this as they were trying to get some decent pictures of me but I just kept flailing around! Here I am demonstrating how to play the bongos

Enter.....the talent! Mr. and Mrs. Dini! While at this location at Riverside Park in Hartford, I was showing them that there is always a place to do some intimate close ups and to create the lighting situations you want despite the bright craziness of high noon- which is exactly when we were shooting!

Here Miss Eileen changes it up by changing her perspective while shooting- she got a really great shot of this, I hope she posts it on her blog! (hint, hint)

See the thing about shooting Robin is, it is all about her GRILL!! This girl just loves to laugh, as do I, so of course we LOVE hanging out and just laughing!

I caught a rare, quiet moment with Robin in between us laughing! I love it!

Now I have been driving under this overpass for YEARS and have always wanted to go up and shoot here...so why not? I knew it would create some really dynamic shooting conditions but also introduce some challenges as well - super bright crazy light with really no escape....it was a big hit with the ladies- they got some crazy good shots here!

Check them out working it- we were really seeing what different lenses do for the same situation and it was pretty cool

Who doesn't like a little foreground action?

Eileen is rocking her shot of Robin here

So the longer view of the overpass was pretty cool- but man, turn to the side and WHAT??? This was a cool location to really illustrate how exposing differently for an image can dramatically change the whole feel of each picture

We extended our shooting time by going to this cool tunnel in Hartford where Mike and I shot our clients Jessica and Eric a few months back- here Claudia is working her angle

Enter....THE FRANKNESS! I just LOVED shooting this guy! He was so comfortable in front of the camera, many thanks to Mrs. Dini for breaking him is for our shoot- it certainly helps to have your wife be a professional photographer ;)

Miss Val McCormick aka the new Butterfly QUEEN! :) Shooting it up!

Love this shot of Frank as he was being photographed by the ladies

Meet the cast: Miss Val McCormick

Miss Eileen Broderick- her eyes are just amazing!!

The super sarcastic Claudia of Fabuluxe Photography

Mrs. Robin Dini!

The Frankness! aka Frank Dini!

So after our shoot we went back to my studio and I made a big dinner while everyone downloaded their images and picked their favorites for our critique. This was another one of my goals for myself- to cook more- and I really loved bustling around the kitchen making rice & beans, tortilla soup and corn muffins for the crew! Great shot Robin!

Here my littlest one, Miss Georgie, was Mommy's helper and did such a great job making the corn muffins! It's a family affair at Ten Eyck Tuesdays! Great shot Robin!
